Boom. Its a running project car, but it says it has "2 bent valves (no sure if is the intake or exhaust)"

Am I missing something here? Are there valves in the exhaust/intake? What do you guys think about the car/price before I text/call this guy.

I'm guessing he means the intake/exhaust valves for the one of the cylinders.

You can get one without bent valves for around 3 grand so there is that. I say you do it though. I love the S13, and I really wanted one.

okay, that makes more sense. Any idea if its an easy fix on a ka24de?

...

yes. BUT, aside from the 2 bent valves, this is the cleanest/cheapest 240sx around. I just want to use it to learn how to fix up a car. You think that even with the 2 valves, I can drive it home?

I spotted this one too and thought about calling. Warning though, its been up for over a month now, and hasnt sold. So something is obviously turning buyers away.

Also bent valves... sounds like a facade for a little larger damage underneath.

Offer 500-750 and plan on a motor swap. Be simple and get an SR20......or be bold and do an RB swap....or be blasphemous and go with an S2000 motor.............Or go full derp and build an NA KA24 and make a fraction of the power of the SR20 for 4x the price.

I've rebuilt cylinder heads before just not on this vehicle. I'm thinking you'll have to pull the head off and rebuild it. It's not that hard, you just have to be careful because if you mess up you'll bend the valves and have to redo the whole thing.

Kinja'd!!! Brian Silvestro > TurboSloth

Just test drive it first. If it feels right, go for it. It's only a thousand bucks, so I think NP for what you're looking for.

It would at least involve removing and rebuilding the head. I'd also be wary of other damage to the engine, such as piston damage caused by bending the valves.

Do it and swap in an SR20 and be sure to take a picture.

Ouch, two bent valves...

I'd offer him less, maybe like $750 and have a nice little project. Ya may as well do the head gasket then too (I don't think you can reuse head gaskets anyway...?).

Looks nice though. I had the valves out on my old MR2 to replace the valve stem seals while I did the head gasket and it's not too crazy of work... Ok, it takes a while - especially if it's only a part-time project and it's your first time (like me) - but it's definitely doable! Just label everything!

Bent valves though... gotta be from bad timing/snapped timing belt and an interference engine, right?
Anybody?? I couldn't imagine any other way they could get bent...

If anything, I would replace gaskets and timing belt, and any other pumps and whatnot.

Did you need to get the engine out to replace the valves? or were you able to access them from the top?

Yeah might as well go all nine yards and do the timing belt, water pump, and anything else - I got a headgasket kit that came with a crapload of new gaskets and such.

You need the head out to get the valves out. You'll also probably need a valve keeper remover which makes life real easy to get the keepers back on. You can get the head out by yourself though, if it's aluminum it shouldn't be too heavy. Gotta disconnect the intake and exhaust manifolds and anything else that connects to the head too.

The valves only have a skinny stem and a wide bottom so you can't pull em upwards to take em out - you gotta just pop em downwards (into the cylinder if you were to leave the head on the block).

i suspect at 160K your looking at another tbelt and waterpump etc. Bushings. He didnt say if its passed or failed inspection. but in jersey its probably just a cat.

I dont know if those motors are interference or not, but if he bent a valve, then the piston has hit the valve, hasnt it? Possible damage to the piston.

But the biggest thing that could be the no go, is rust. He doesnt mention it, but im sure it has some, its just a matter of how much.

Dont let all that scare you, it just wasnt the car i wanted to buy for a beater. As almost perfect as it was, i decided against even calling.

For 700-800, you might have a nice deal.

"If someone asks if you want a clean 240SX coupe, you say YES!!!"

Even if it is just to fix the valve train, or replace the cylinder head, maybe find a replacement back seat... clean it up a little, and flip it, like Wheeler Dealers...

It is a 240SX that isn't destroyed.

It has a bit of value.

But getting a better price due to engine problems and seller desperation is not out of line.

I don't know the going rates on the car... but even at 900$... if it turns out to be FAR worse than it seems... parting out the car would probably make you a profit.

and if you want the car... this is probably a decent place to start a project, on one that hasn't been drifted into walls a lot.

Jersey still does inspections for cats? I thought it was for safety? or did I just get it confused....

Inspections are for safety or emissions?

Also for the bushings for what? Motor mounts?

Kinja'd!!! BoxerFanatic, troublesome iconoclast. > TurboSloth

Kinja'd!!!0

There are intake valves, and exhaust valves, in the cylinder head, with passages that are connected to the intake manifold and exhaust manifold. The intake valves open between the passages and the combustion chamber to intake air, and close to allow compression, and then the exhaust valves open to let the combusted gasses out, and then the process repeats.

He isn't sure which valves are bent, and thus not seating and sealing properly, which will mean that the engine won't run well. The non-sealing valves will prevent full compression in the cylinder(s) that are affected.

Lol i could have sworn we talked about this about a year or so ago.

NJ inspections are simply for emissions now. No safety. My dad just recently went through with his airbag lights on. No problem.

Bushings. Alll bushings, control arms, linkages, swaybar endlinks, etc and motor mounts. Its about that time, if not already.

Hahah i just remember you asking about airbags or something and inspection.

I flaked on the mr2 i was gonna look at due to some frame damage the seller quietly mentioned. So now im looking for my 1000 dollar rwd beater.

btw dude, did you know Etown has a road course? Im thinking im gonna take their intro course to be able to run there. At first i wanted to kart, but then their karting is nearly just as expensive as running your own car. Screw karting, i wanna run my car.

I know Club Loose (if you're into drifting), does a bunch of drift events at etown, which is why I want a RWD car, but from what I see at etown, the track is pretty narrow compared to a road course (from what I've seen on videos). If anything, I'd try NJMP, but its waaaayyyy to far.

if i could drift my lude i would, but i cant haha. And yeah those club loose events are why i want a rwd beater car ahah. Ill have to see what their road course looks like. and NJMP is very far, and im sure its even more expensive....

Yep! Just you and your big muscles ;)

I think most engines have hooks for an engine lift, but when the time comes, you can just grab these with your hands and just pull the head straight up from the block. Much easier said than done mind you.

I'm pretty sure the only specialty tool I needed was the valve keeper tool ( http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-36200-Ke… ) and that was just to put the keepers* back in. Other than that, it was really just a lot of "basic" mechanic's tools - wrenchs, sockets, deep sockets, socket extensions, PB Blaster (vital), pipe (aka jack handle), swear words, etc.
And this got me all the way down to the valve level where you could do almost any valve and head work.

In this picture, there is a hole in my 2's heart, but now after looking at these "old" photos there is a hole in my heart (where my 2 used to be)...

Kinja'd!!!

Dem hooks... (I'm assuming most engines have em)

Kinja'd!!!

You can actually see the keepers here - they're next to the springs

*Honestly, I had no idea what valve keepers were until I had to take them off lol
But they're very tiny and very important and you don't want to lose them o_O

Your into a new engine seem to me that is a no clearance engine in the 240 means the valves hit the top of the piston. there are just to many unknowns with that motor now. Could just be the valves and head and/or pistons and/or Crank and/or bearings and/block damage. Junk the engine, keep the car and do a small block Chev conversion
